Abstract

This List of Readings succeeds those published on the same subject which were developed by the Missionary Study Fellowship on Christianity and Communism and were published in the Occasional Bulletin, Vol. II, No. 7 (August 1, 1951) and Vol, III, No. 6 (June 12, 1952). Since the Study Fellowship ceased in 1953, we have asked Dr. M. Searle Bates, Professor of Missions in Union Theological Seminary, to prepare an up-to-date list which would meet requests frequently received. Professor Bates long taught history, including a course in Russian History, in the University of Nanking and, since 1950, he has been carrying the Russian, East European, and Asian factors in the Seminary ocurse on Communism and Christianity, associated with Professors Reinhold Nisbuhr and John C. Bennett. He also worked with the Missionary Study Fellowship from 1951 to 1953. The enormous field of “Christian alternatives to Communism” has had to be left aside, for the most part, since the range of materials on democracy, liberty, economic progress, improvement of government, and social reform of every sort, knows no bounds. Certain chapters in general bocks, of course, are relevant to such issues.–Ed.
