Abstract

This study to investigate the effect of the communicative language method as a solution to students performance of secondary school students, in Oral English The study adopted a true experimental design – a post-test only equivalent group design. The study was carried out in Ogoja Education Zone which is one of the three education zones in Cross River state. The population of the study comprised all 2,137 secondary school two (SS II) students inOgoja Education The instrument for data collection was the researcher developed tag Communicative Language Teaching Method in Teaching Oral English, The test was face validated by specialists in English Language and education. Two specialists were from Department of Arts/Education, University of Calabar Calabar and two In analysing the data, the means and the standard deviations were used to answer the research questions Two research questions guided the study. The results of the study revealed that communicative method significantly enhanced students ‘pronunciation of speech sounds more than the conventional method. There is no significant difference in the use of stress by the students taught with the conventional method and those taught with the communicative method. Based on the discussion of the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that oral English should be taught using the communicative method as it is hoped that this method will help to minimize the present problems which the students encounter in learning to communicate orally
