Abstract

Abstract Renibacterium salmoninarum (American Type Culture Collection: ATCC 33209) agglutinated spermatozoa of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, chinook salmon O. tshawytscha, white sucker Catostomus commersoni, and goldfish Carassius auratus, but not that of walleye Stizostedion vitreum or bulls Bos taurus. When examined microscopically, the bacteria were seen to be binding to the tails but not the heads of the sperm. The sperm agglutinin may be the previously reported renibacterial hemagglutinin.
