Abstract

Abstract This entry provides an overview of communication theory of identity (CTI), applications of the theory in intercultural communication, and directions for future research and practice. CTI is a theory that explicates multilayered identities such as personal, enacted, relational, and communal identity and it is one of a few theories that highlight communication as a core component of identity, rather than merely an outcome of identity management or a process that creates identity.
