Abstract

If one were to identify the most beneficial tangible apparatus for nonverbal individuals, undoubtedly, the communication board would rate highly. For those who are not familiar with the use of such devices, this paper presents the basics of their design, function, and construction. Many variables are considered whenever an individual requires such intermediary devices to enhance and expand expressive language. Selection of the most appropriate language is a primary consideration. In conjunction with language selection, the person's level(s) of functioning need to be assessed both physically and cognitively. Sensorial evaluations are also needed to detect audition problems, agnosia, aphasia, or defective vision. Finally, the construction variables of size, range of motion, costs, and materials must be pre-determined if a functional board is to be produced. Without such planning, the design of hastily derived boards may be as haphazard as its eventual usage.
