Abstract

This article provides an overview of communication disorders secondary to closed head injury (CHI). Distinctions between stroke and traumatic brain injury populations are reviewed. Language disorders resulting from CHI and some of the confusion surrounding the issue are discussed, as is the notion of language dysfunction in CHI as a disorder of language use. Clinical applications of discourse analysis are also provided. Finally, speech and swallowing disorders often associates with CHI are reviewed.
