Abstract

In the midst of societal change, even chaos, the Russian media are striving to establish their role in that change, in society and in the political process. The evolution of Russian media, and the factors influencing that evolution, ensure that the result will be significantly different than the expected typical Western model. Based on personal interviews with senior media executives, editors, correspondents and reporters (both Russian journalists and Western journalists in Russia) insights are provided to the historical, cultural, economic and political forces shaping Russian media in this time of turmoil. Observations on the current state of media and societal developmental trends help to predict the future function and role of media in Russian society. Parallels and contrasts with the development of Western media and society lend interesting perspective to what is a society and a people searching for themselves, pointing to the uniquely Russian role that media will play in the process and ultimately in the society.
