Abstract

This paper examines how State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) communicate results from their various management systems to the decision and policy makers in the organization, using the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) as a case study. The paper discusses the data needs to allow for proper operation of the multitude of management systems implemented by the DOTs. The paper also covers how the Iowa DOT utilizes their pavement management systems, bridge management system, pavement marking management system, sign management system, HERS-ST, and other systems to communicate with top management and policy makers so that consistent, cost-effective, and objective decisions are made regarding the different assets that the DOT manages. The paper stresses the importance of integration to the success of the process.
