Abstract

Many professional scientists and engineers spend a great deal of their time telling people things: giving instructions; explaining ideas to government officials, boards of directors, potential customers; taking part in technical conferences, symposia and discussions; giving postgraduate seminars and invitation lectures to undergraduates in universities and polytechnics; writing research papers and reports. The effective written and spoken presentation of technical information is a vital part of their professional practice.
