Abstract

The Muslim community in India is the second largest community in the country, following the Hindu community, and it forms the largest Muslim minority in the world. Ever since the decline of Moghul rule in India, Muslims in India have been facing communal riots and conflicts from some segments of the Hindu community who are communalists and militants. In this paper, an attempt is made to shed light on the Hindu–Muslim riots and conflicts in India from pre-independence to post-independence, with particular reference to the demolition of the historic Babri Masjid in 1992 and the genocide of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002. The paper also discusses the causes of these problems and presents a few suggestions of some Muslim scholars on the resolution of the Hindu–Muslim tensions and conflicts in India.
