Abstract

* Up to 81% of missed injuries in the initial evaluation of patients with trauma are orthopaedic in nature, and up to 35% of these injuries require surgical management.* Systematic tertiary examinations are an integral part of the continuing evaluation of a patient with polytrauma.* Orthopaedic surgeons should have a prominent role in the tertiary evaluation of patients with trauma.* Examination should include inspection and palpation of all extremities, with particular attention paid to the hands and feet, where the majority of missed injuries occur.
