Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach to capturing the user requirements for support tools for consumer goods product development. Best practices from the fields of knowledge management and software requirements specification are combined. The CommonKADS methodology is used to analyse the organisational context and highlight bottlenecks in the product development tasks. Use Cases are used to capture the user requirements for a support system to overcome these bottlenecks and otherwise support product development. These methodologies are applied in a process of structured interviews followed by group workshops. This process has been applied successfully in 40 end user interviews and 3 group workshops involving product and process developers from a range of international Unilever companies. The main benefits found when applying this approach are: High degree of buy-in from end user community and senior stakeholders Understandable process and deliverables Effective use of end user time — Process can be effectively applied by non KM specialists
