Abstract

The historic relationship between the rise of public education and public libraries is noted. The similarities of problems facing both the urban schools and urban public libraries are noted. Since many of the suggestions for improvement of the urban public schools are equally apt for public libraries, the Urban Libraries Council and Council of the Great City Schools are natural allies.
