Abstract

If workflow is being used in the production system then there will be many instances of ‘live’ workflows, i.e. workflows that have been started but have not finished. This is due to the fact that workflow instances can have a lifetime of minutes, hours or even days especially when considering interactive steps. Another factor to consider is that the business processes themselves can change in the course of the time but once a workflow instance has been started its business process is fixed by the workflow definition at the time of starting.
