Abstract

AbstractThis chapter compares trade patterns for Canada and the USA in oilseed rape, maize, and soyabeans by specifically examining the value of exports in these products. Data have been gathered from the 1990-96 period, prior to the commercialization of GM crops. This is compared with the post-commercialization period of 1997-2003. The insights gained from examining trade patterns for crops where commercial GM varieties exist are used to examine questions relating to the introduction of GM wheat to determine what market impacts may be expected from the commercialization of this GM crop. While market losses may occur for a brief period following the commercialization of GM crop varieties, the data have shown that huge markets are not being lost. Rather, trade diversion has occurred.
