Abstract

New technical discoveries in higher–temperature superconductivity (HTS) have forced private companies throughout the world to assess the impact of these discoveries on planning for research and development (R&D). Because significant commercial outcomes for HTS are highly uncertain at this time, strategic decisions in R&D are particularly difficult for managements. This study compares the pattern of R&D decision–making in the USA and Japan, using interviews with major executives of corporations of both countries. Important differences are described, which could have a substantial impact on future commercial development of this emerging technology.
