Abstract

Based on twelve years of commercial payload processing experience, Astrium NA has performed an in-house study to document efficiencies and challenges related to the processing of our Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC). The results have been reviewed and relevant data collected to quantify the associated improvements, deficiencies and related risk mitigations and solutions. “Commercial Payload Processing Experience” describes the insight and knowledge gained during the processing of nearly sixty external payloads. Emphasis is placed on the techniques and methodologies developed to minimize the impact of challenges associated with processing spaceflight payloads as a commercial entity. Furthermore, the benefits and complexities associated while operating with a corporate team comprised of US and international partners are explored. Process stages, such as compatibility assessments, detailed interface definitions, selection, design and manufacturing of hardware, system analysis, and physical integration were studied and techniques developed to maximize efficiencies and minimize program risks.
