Abstract

The work of Ott, Rickes and Woods (1948) shows a close comparison between vitamin B12 and crude sources of the animal protein factor. Lillie, Denton and Bird (1948) have shown a similarity between vitamin B12 and an acid precipitate of cow manure. McGinnis et al. (1949) and Stockstad et al. (1949) suggest that A.P.F. concentrates from fermentation products contain a growth factor for poults and chicks which is different from vitamin B12.Whether or not the growth response due to factors other than vitamin B12 which appear to be present in certain fermentation products is due to A.P.F. or other “B” complex vitamins as yet unidentified, will have to remain unanswered until they can be isolated more certainly than at present. The purpose of the tests reported here was to determine (1) if undepleted chicks hatched from eggs produced by hens fed a diet containing 5% fish meal and 5% .
