Abstract

A short while back, a few letters were sent to the editor ofThe Journal(see also p 190 in this issue) regarding the University of Prague, which was founded by Charles IV in the year 1348. Some of these letters imply that the Charles University was from its very beginning a national Czech institution founded by the King of Bohemia, while others claim that Charles was at the same time a Roman king and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and actually founded the university in his dual capacity as king of Bohemia and king of the Roman Empire. To the writer it appears somewhat unrealistic to try to interpret this historic event which took place more than 600 years ago in the latter half of the Middle Ages in terms of the modern connotation of the word "nationality."
