Abstract

A paper by Zhao and Li that was recently published in this journal (J Oceanogr 75:207–223, 2019) presented the dependence of wind stress across an air–sea interface on wave states. The purpose of these comments is to demonstrate that the sea surface roughness formula proposed by Zhao and Li can also be applied to estimate the sea surface roughness based on wind and wave statistics. The average statistical properties of the sea surface roughness expressed in terms of the mean value and the standard deviation are presented. Results are exemplified using long-term wind statistics from the northern North Sea and long-term wave statistics from the same ocean area and partly the same period.
