Abstract

Abstract Myxobolus aureatus Ward, 1919, has been redescribed from a new American host, fathead minnow Pimephales promelas. Large plasmodia form nodular, cystlike structures up to 1.5 mm across in the fins of fathead minnows; the enclosing host tissue appears black because of an accumulation of melanophores and melanin-containing macrophages. 'rhe description of the species is refined and compared with descriptions of three unnamed, very similar Myxobolus species from other cyprinid hosts from adjacent waters.
