Abstract

Recent understanding of the problem of the electromagnetic mass differences has been indebted to Harari's assumption.1> He showed that the Jl=2 mass differences, m •• -m •• , 2mzo=mz·-mz-, etc., are correctly obtained by introducing the Born terms of the virtual Compton scattering in the Cottingham formula, while the Jl=l mass differences, m'.-mk'• mP-m,., etc., have an additional contribution from the subtraction or Reggeized tadpole (the A 2 Regge pole). There are many attempts along the line of this conjecture. The contribution of the pion (nucleon) intermediate state to the electromagnetic self-energy diagram of the pion (nucleon) is estimated to be about 4.4 MeV2> (0.7 MeV),3l while experimentally Jm, = 4.6 MeV and Jm N= -1.29 MeV. The contribution of the A 2 Regge pole to the latter (Jl=l) has not yet been estimated successfully for lack of knowledge of the coupling of the virtual photon to the A 2 Regge pole. 4l The purpose of this note is to estimate repeatedly the size of the contribution of the Born term, using the. new expressions for the form factors :
