Abstract
The author examines in a Hartree-Fock approximation, the influence of carbon interstitials on the transition temperature Talpha gamma between the alpha and gamma phases of iron. The author shows that the electronic free energy resulting from the difference of the screening potentials in the alpha and gamma phases is considerable. It is also shown that the solubility of carbon at Talpha gamma is much higher in the gamma phase than in the alpha phase.
