Abstract
At one time the notion that Esenin had made a brilliant debut in poetry in Petrograd during the pre revolutionary years of 1915 and 1916 had wide currency in the literature on him. The story was that he won recognition among professional writers immediately upon his arrival in the capital and became virtually the central figure in literature. (1) Many writings of recent years reproduce these notions in full. Investigators assert that soon after Esenin's arrival in Petrograd, literary circles began "a fight for him. Some sought to subject him to their reactionary, mystical views, while others, valuing the poet's originality, tried to support the strong sides of his talent."
