Abstract
Okamura et al., ibid., vol. 19, p.997 (1977), performed diamagnetic loop measurements indicating that the return current is limited to the duration of the injected electron beam pulse. The present authors, Hopman et al., are not satisfied that plasma turbulence provides a reasonable explanation as to why the return beam decays so fast. They offer an alternative explanation whereby the return beam is stopped by the original electron beams induced field.
