Stoner, R. ; Ptak, R. Abstract Katz has criticized the "charge exchange model" for the production of broad emission lines in Seyfert galaxies and quasars, citing the absence of strong narrow cores in observed emission lines, the ionization and acceleration by fast protons of the ambient gas that supplies the electrons for charge exchange, the apparently insufficient overall luminosity of type 1 Seyferts relative to the energy in suprathermal protons, and the widths of hydrogen emission lines in 14329 A. We consider these criticisms in the light of more recent work on charge exchange models, finding that they are not major objections to the charge exchange mechanism for broad-line production, but that they may provide clues to the physical nature of such emission-line objects.
