Abstract

The Obama administration's proposed science budget for 2011 includes a 6.6% funding increase for major US science agencies and almost $2bn more for NASA's research pot. Yet most reports, including ours (“Obama cancels Moon return” 2 February), have focused on what the budget leaves out: namely, the Constellation manned-spacecraft programme and future human missions to the Moon or Mars (see also p6). Is this a mistake? Will it pave the way for more and better robotic missions? And does it mean the end of the space race – or the start of a new one?
