Absurd, insane, horrifying and outrageous – these are all words physicsworld.com readers used to describe the news that seven Italian earthquake experts have been found guilty of manslaughter for their actions in the hours and days before 6 April 2009, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake killed 308 people in the L'Aquila province of Italy (“Guilty verdict for Italian earthquake scientists”, 22 October; see also pp6–7 and pp17–18).
