Lee aims to investigate the link between trade liberalization and the job matching process in India. The author claims that this study would be the first to estimate an aggregate matching function for the labor market in India. The study uses monthly data from India and divides the data into five sub-periods: (1) the period before reform (before 1992); (2) the period of economic reform driven by external factors (1992–97); (3) the period of economic reform that reflected strong requests from domestic firms and industries (1998–2002); (4) the period of an economic boom (2003–08); and (5) the period after the global financial crisis (after 2009). The study defines trade liberalization as trade openness: (Export+Import)/GDP.
