Abstract

This issue of NeoReviews is devoted largely to disorders of the placenta. In two earlier reviews, Dr Kurt Benirschke provided excellent overviews of the normal and abnormal placenta (see the June 2004 and September 2005 issues of NeoReviews ). The articles in the current issue provide more detail about recent advances in investigations of placental pathology, offering information that should be understood by all neonatologists to help them interpret pathologists’ reports and explain findings better to parents. In addition to expanding our understanding of chorioamnionitis and “demystifying” villitis and fetal thrombotic vasculopathy, this issue includes an extensive discussion of the twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
