Abstract

Within the UK the differing perceptions of illness between patients, healthcare professionals and healthcare providers has been widely acknowledged (DH 2004a, b, Lightfoot and Sloper 2003, Modernisation Agency 2002, DH 2001), and there is increased recognition that children can and should contribute to decisions about their health care (Boyland 2004,Lightfoot and Sloper 2003, Meade et al 2001, Beresford 1997). This study supports these positions and the findings suggest that the priorities of young people with a chronic illness differ from those of their parents and healthcare professionals. The findings suggest a broad range of topics relating topsychosocial issues that young people and their parents would like to discuss with healthcare professionals.
