Abstract

Early warning tools allow the calculation of a score from a set of physiological observations – for example respiratory rate, oxygen saturation level, and heart rate – to identify patients at risk of deterioration. When physiological observations are outside of the normal range, the total score will activate a response to ensure that patients are provided with timely treatment and where possible avert admission to the critical care unit. Early warning tools were developed initially for the adult population to identify patients at risk of deterioration (Goldhill et al 1999,Subbe et al 2001). As a result critical care outreach teams, with support from the Department of Health (2000), have developed three main aims:
