Abstract

evoked discussion. Agawu advocates extended Western staff transcriptions of African music to analyze structure in terms of clear, definable musical attributes. He calls for a close reading of an individual piece without what he calls the props of extramusical factors (Fn. 4). Koetting would affirm this view. He looks for precise analysis and cautions against the use of nonmusical or essentially extraneous evidence to explain musical phenomena. Agawu and Koetting part company when Agawu asserts that the a priori limitations of the notational system have had no significant influence on the present analysis. Koetting's long use of the TUBS (Time Unit Box System) as a descriptive notation (1970) strongly suggests that he finds traditional staff notation problematic, particularly with its measure-delimiting bar lines and implied accents.
