Abstract

A joint one day meeting, organized by the IPEMB Radionuclide Special Interest Group and the BIR Nuclear Medicine Sub-Committee, examined the state of the art with regard to measurement and intervention in renal nuclear medicine. The pressures from clinical audit, accreditation and medico-legal issues demand greater standardization of guidelines and protocols. There are many tests available and departments differ in personnel, access to radio-pharmaceuticals, age of equipment and physics support. Despite the variation in techniques employed, radionuclide methodology is well suited to the study of kidney function using plasma clearance measurements and/or imaging with renography or renal cortical scanning.
