Abstract

Rapid progress has been made in environmental systems control recently because of societal demands for solutions to various environmental pollution problems and because of developments in control and systems engineering which have made it possible to control large complex systems. However, the history of this progress is brief, and a review or outline of the methodology for environmental systems control has not yet appeared. In this review, the importance of environmental systems control, some of its characteristics, and a methodology suggested by the author are described. Secondly, some aspects of research on environmental systems control are introduced using water and air pollution problems. Next, the contents of five papers which will be presented at this session are briefly introduced. Finally, the fields of environmental systems control which are requested to be developed and the methodologies which should be investigated in the near future for developing them, will be mentioned.
