Abstract

The laws governing the behaviour of gases (Boyle's, Dalton's, Henry's) and the equations related to the physics of bubbles (Laplace, surface tension, etc) assume paramount importance when the human body is placed in a hyperbaric or hypobaric decompression environment. Boyle (1667) was the first to witness the formation of bubbles under decompression in the eye of a viper, which was visibly distressed.
