Abstract

During the Parliamentary Enquiry on Fraud in the Dutch Construction Industry, CEOs gave various responses to the accusation that their companies were involved in fraud. Some responses only offer explanations of what had happened, but other responses were aimed to take away the blame that fell upon the companies and their executives. In this comment I distinguish excuses and justifications given by CEOs. The distinction helps to clarify the responses and to assess whether they are persuasive.
