Abstract

Among the works attributed to Bishop Claude of Turin (c. 817-828) in manuscript 48 in the Biblioteca della Badia, at Montecassino (c. 1022-1035) are four Paulinian commentaries whose authenticity has been debated for over fifty years. According to the cited sources, the compilations could not have been written before 812. It seems that there was only one author, to judge from the exegetical method used; a number of internal traits tend to reinforce the hypothesis of a Carolingian redaction. Among the sources is one that could be the third recension of the Libellus de dignitate sacerdotali, a pseudo-Ambrosian text that was widely copied and cited at the end of the eleventh century; its presence is surprising in this context, but does not, a priori, exclude an attribution of the commentaries to Claude of Turin. After due consideration, the attribution furnished by the codex appears plausible, despite the absence of decisive proof in its favour.
