Abstract

We have commented before on this page on the difficulties facing the shrinking number of independent pigment manufacturers: difficulties that do not just stem from the current static position of the coatings industry (printing inks are in a slightly healthier position) but from what some describe as “unfair competition” from abroad. The position is that the market, and its prices, is largely dominated by the large international chemical companies and pigment manufacture represents only a small part of their individual total production. In consequence, they can afford to sell at no profit, or even at a loss, whilst waiting for an upturn in the business.
