Abstract

I read with interest the article entitled “When Do Leaks Occur? An Analysis of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program” By Clapp B et al. 1 Clapp B. ProgramSOARD. 2023; (in press) Google Scholar Over a period of 5 years, using the MBSAQIP Participant Use Files (PUF), 370,369 sleeve gastrectomies (SG) and 159,280 Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses (RYGB) were evaluated. Of those, 598 (0.16%) SG leaks with a time to presentation of 13.2 days, and 520 leaks (0.32%) after RYGB with a presentation time of 9.5 days. Of note, RYGB patients had a 2x fold risk of leaks.
