Abstract

In a paper published recently (Doronzo et al., 2022), a Roman silver coin issued by the emperor Titus is taken to be irrefutable proof that the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE did not occur in August but in the fall. However, this comment notes that the coin was misidentified and that it is actually perfectly consistent with the August date.
