Abstract
To the Editor. —That all 50 states will adopt legislation like that in Rhode Island is alarming. I have reviewed the Florida Optometry Law and find no basis for the statement that in Florida optometry already takes advantage of the available pharmacology to aid diagnosis. This statement was brought to the attention of the president of the Florida Opometric Association, and he knew of no such legislation. There was a Florida Attorney Generals ruling in 1957 that optometrists were not permitted to administer drugs or perform surgery. Dentists are trained in pharmacology, in many cases alongside physicians in training. Osteopathic physicians have upgraded their training and have already been accepted into the medical profession. The threat to legislate ophthalmologists out of the fields of contact lenses, vision training, orthoptics, and refractions is a serious one.
