Abstract
This comment identifies misinterpreted data associated with a reported synthesis of Brønsted acidic ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)imidazolium acetate for the dissolution of chitosan. Relying on the Brønsted-Lowry theory, NMR analyses, and density functional calculations, we demonstrate that such ionic liquids are unlikely to be produced.
