Abstract

In a recent article in JAMT, Zapassky et al (2009) attempted to "reveal everyday computational intelligence in antiquity" based on lmlk jars from Iron Age II Judah. Their main conclusion is that the Judeans accurately calculated the capacity of lmlk jars, based on a 'simple' mathematical algorithm that ensures 3-4% accuracy, as follows: Volume (in ancient Assiron units, each being one tenth bath)=hdXi the maximal horizontal circumference (in ancient finger units)+half the vertical circumference (in fingers)-2 Cubit units (Zapassky et al 2009:65). The computation may be correct, but not the conclusion.
