Abstract

Saltwater fish produce high amounts of trimethylamine N -oxide (TMAO) to maintain osmotic balance with the seawater and to counteract the hydrostatic pressure. In humans, trimethylamine is generated from the gut microbiome out of carnitine, lecithin and choline, with subsequent metabolism to TMAO in the liver.1
