Abstract

Disordered-Incommensurate-Commensurate transitions with a 2 × 2 structure are analyzed in terms of the Ising model on a triangular lattice with conserved magnetization. In the mean-field approximation one finds that for a certain range of antiferromagnetic nearest and next nearest neighbour interactions paramagnetic-incommensurate-commensurate transitions take place in this order on lowering the temperature, which corresponds to the experimental situation on β-eucryptite.
