Abstract

Neutron diffraction measurements on the hexagonal Tb 5Sn 3 compound, with space group P6 3/mcm indicate a 55 K transition to an incommensurate transverse amplitude modulated structure. The magnetic propagation vector has a k z=0.528 c* component and the terbium magnetic moment direction is parallel to the a-axis of the crystal. The compound presents a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure at 1.8 K with an orthohexagonal enlarged magnetic cell. The moments direction remains parallel to a.
