Abstract

A survey of the main properties associated with incommensurate (amplitude modulated) structures in rare earth magnetic systems is presented. By considering only the crystal field effects and the bilinear exchange coupling, a self-consistent Periodic Field model explains quantitatively all the observed features: the thermodynamical properties, the metamagnetism, the multistep behaviour, the complex phase diagrams, the locking of the structures onto a commensurate configuration with a short periodicity at low temperature, the high field resurgence of the incommensurability.
