Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe the situation of scientific ethical review committees in Dominican Republic, in terms both their organization, composition, activities and training needs, and the level of following recommendations offered by International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research involving Human Beings (2002). Seven scientific ethical review committees reporting activities during 2007 were included. A structure questionnaire elaborated based on "Complementary Guidelines to Survey and Evaluate Ethical Review Practices" developed by World Health Organization (2002) was used. Findings reveal the complexity of current situation of ethical review committees in Dominican Republic and the need to join efforts to achieve greater fulfillment of CIOMS guidelines recommendations.

Summary
De los siete CEI participantes, tres pertenecen a organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONGs), tres a instituciones públicas y uno a una institución privada. En República Dominicana, los CEI tienen procedimientos distintos para la elección de presidentes y miembros. Institucional elige a los candidatos y, en otros, los miembros del CEI presentan las candidaturas a los cargos y los eligen por voto mayoritario. De los siete presidentes de CEI, uno dedica tiempo completo al comité, tres le dedican medio tiempo y tres tiempos parciales. Exceptuando a un CEI, todos cobran un monto fijo por revisión de protocolos, de los cuales tres reciben una partida presupuestaria de la institución. A pesar de los cobros por revisión de protocolos, cuatro comités comentaron no contar con recursos suficientes para llevar a cabo sus actividades. Básicamente, no existe ninguna comunicación o trabajo colaborativo entre los CEI del país y mucho menos de la región latinoamericana
