Abstract

ABSTRACT The legal regulations regarding the right of possession of foreign-national real persons are important factors affecting the rate of foreign migrations. The British have been among the citizens of the top 10 countries with the highest rates of real estate possession in Turkey until 2021, and they mostly preferred Didim. The British population constituted one-fourth of the region's total population in the mid-2000s. However, a flow of return migration began in 2012, and the number of returning British lifestyle migrants dramatically increased in the following years. This study aims to develop an understanding of the reasons for the return migration of British lifestyle migrants from the viewpoint of the local people by adopting a qualitative research method. For this purpose, data were collected in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 through observations and interviews in Didim, hosting the highest number of British lifestyle migrant population in Turkey. At the end of the analyses, four main reasons, abuse of goodwill, economic obstacles, legal loopholes regarding the problems and other vexing issues, were found for the return migration of British lifestyle migrants.
